Paris Workshop on the Organization of Science Learning Planet Institute, October 25-28, 2022
- Robert Ward (co-organizer) Georgia Institute of Technology
- Marc Santolini (co-organizer) Learning Planet Institute
Description
The organization of science is changing. In professional settings, the production of new knowledge is increasingly performed by teams, of increasing size, complex structure and patterns of coordination. Science is shifting too outside its professional context into citizen and crowd settings in which amateurs freely enter and work alone or in collaboration with industry and academic partners. What do these shifts mean for the landscape of scientific knowledge? For the behavior and success of organizations? For the experience and careers of their members? How can we harness new organizational forms to produce scientific and technological innovations? The goal of this workshop is to bring together a small and selected group of scholars to present and discuss research, and spur follow on collaboration around these questions.
Agenda and Logistics
Session 1 | October 25, 2022 The first session will be hosted by the Interaction Data Lab at the Learning Planet Institute: 8 bis Rue Charles V, 75004 Paris, France. The session will start in the morning with presentations (25 min each) by each of the invited speakers followed by a discussion for each talk (20 min each). We will break for lunch in the early afternoon and then return for an open discussion to stimulate future research and collaboration.
Session 2 | October 26-28, 2022 The second session will take place off site at Porte de Versailles inside the 2022 International Genetically Engineered Machines Competition (iGEM) Grand Jamboree the world's premier synthetic biology competition. This session will focus on current research using iGEM as a model system to examine the organization of science and on opportunities for research in this setting. The first part of the session will take coincide with the iGEM Insights Workshop in which current research on iGEM will be presented. Workshop participants will be introduced to iGEM as a research setting, see presentations on current work and ongoing research and have an opportunity to interact with iGEM teams and observe their projects up close.
Registration and Fees
Registration for the first session only is free. Registration for the full workshop including the iGEM Insights session is 750 euros plus tax. Invited participants will receive an email from Robert Ward (rward48@gatech.edu) with further details on registration and payment.
